You still can choose "fun" items just don't go overboard. Hint: When loading your registry, try to avoid selecting clearance items because once the item is out of stock it is out of sight. I've seen this happen several times. A couple was getting married in June and they registered in November. Right before Christmas big deals and sales occur so they clicked on several clearance items for their registry. Well as soon as Christmas was over the items they selected were not available. They were disappointed and received incomplete sets. Don't be disappointed, try to avoid the clearance items.
